Constanze Waeger | “Ontology. A study of becoming”

ENG: There is as much grace as there are bloody disproportions in Constanze Waeger’s silhouetted surrealism. As much pain as expression in the bodily manifestations of growth and development depicted in the symmetrical, almost graphic pieces. A bird reflecting a female body, responding to the dynamic flow of her posture all created by the many layers of refined brush strokes that create an almost three-dimensional depth in her paintings. This process, which is as evasive as the flutter of a wing of a bird is caught in the moment, held in a vibrant grasp of her brush. Thus, it is many tales of morphing, growing and healing Becoming.

THE VISITOR 2018 Oil on canvas, 99 x 119 cm

The German-born artist paints the female form as a symbol of growth, internal as well as evolutionary. In her works of faceless figures, she embodies the right for a woman to be just that; a woman. This strive to becoming liberated and unbound by society and the internal struggles are the emotional goal of her art. She arrived with her family to Mallorca in 1994, aged 14. She studied at the Chelsea College of Art in London and completed her Bachelor at the Edinburgh College of Art after which she spent many years living and working in London, Paris, Basel, New York and Los Angeles. She recently returned to the island with her daughter and has set up her studio here.

ANÀSTASIS 2018 Oil on linen, 220 x 150 cm

“From a young age I was hugely inspired by the old masters from the Rennaisance period such as Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio as well as the surrealist master Salvador Dali. I would spend hours at Museums studying their craft, in total awe over their powerful imagery.”
The skilful execution of her paintings remind us of these old masters, yet she has developed her very own indistinguishable style in the feminine and elegant figurines that unfurl on her canvases.

ODETTE 2018 Oil on canvas, 79 x 99 cm

“My work is meticulous and time consuming, though the craft has little to do with perfection. As I work on each piece, as I add layer after layer, the painting evolves with me. These are not simply layers of paint, but emotions that arise throughout my process. My palette consists of natural earth like colours. I find these colours soothing, harmonious. A feeling of melancholy speaks to our soul, strikes a chord in us which we often find discomfort in exploring. I want to discover this without fear, dare my audience to meet me there, in a vast space without perspective backgrounds, deprived of the influence of our surroundings.”
