El dramático giro que ha tomado el Reino Unido tras la votación del Brexit, el 23 de junio de 2016, es al mismo tiempo punto de partida y motor del nuevo proyecto del genial Matthew Herbert, en el que han participado alrededor de mil músicos de diferentes países de la Unión Europea. Este nuevo y titánico trabajo del productor inglés ha cristalizado en un disco de 16 temas, “The State Between Us”, que se publica el 29 de marzo (fecha prevista para la salida del Reino Unido de la UE) y en una serie de conciertos de gran formato en los que Herbert va acompañado por una gran orquesta, la Brexit Big Band, también llamada The Matthew Herbert Great Britain and Gibraltar European Union Membership Referendum Big Band. Un gran orquesta que será protagonista del concierto especial de clausura de Sónar 2019, el domingo 21 de julio en el Teatre Grec, y al que además también se sumará el Cor Pilot de l’Esmuc, formado por 50 voces. Si Gran Bretaña tiene que dejar Europa al menos que sea a lo grande.
Durante los dos últimos años Herbert ha imaginado junto a sus músicos y colaboradores (entre ellos Arto Lindsay y la respetada dramaturga Caryl Churchill) qué ha pasado desde el día de la votación hasta hoy y qué significa ser británico en 2019. Y lo ha hecho a su manera, juntando una nueva big band para la ocasión e integrando en el discurso sonidos y elementos de la vida real: el desguace de un Ford Fiesta, un desayuno inglés, la demolición de una fábrica, un nadador cruzando el Canal de la Mancha, un paseo en bici por la residencia de campo de la Primera Ministra británica, un rebaño de ovejas en Gales y un árbol en Alemania. Un nuevo capítulo que añadir a su fascinante discografía, repleta de discos (“Around The House”, “Bodily Functions”, “Plat Du Jour”, “One Pig” y el más reciente “A Nude”) en los que las grabaciones de campo y los sonidos del día a día han sido parte fundamental del contenido musical.

One of the only unambiguous positives to come out of the UK’s decision to leave the EU has been the formation of Matthew Herbert’s latest boundary pushing sonic experiment. Formed shortly after the referendum vote of July 2016, The Matthew Herbert Brexit Big Band (aka The Matthew Herbert Great Britain and Gibraltar European Union Membership Referendum Big Band), has enlisted over 1000 musicians and collaborators from across the Continent including Arto Lindsay and Caryl Churchill to reimagine British and European identity in the face of the split. In true Herbert style, physical representative elements of this have been incorporated into the sonic mix – from a Ford Fiesta to an English Breakfast to the sound of a ferry crossing the channel. This has been the starting point for a series of live shows across the continent as well as a 16 track album, “The State Between Us”, due to be released on March 29th – the scheduled date for the UK’s exit.
What the future holds is anyone’s guess, but what is guaranteed is that on July 21st the Matthew Herbert Brexit Big Band will play the closing show of Sónar 2019 at Barcelona’s stunning open air amphitheatre, Teatre Grec. For this very special concert, The orchestra will be joined by the 50 person choir “Cor Pilot de l’ESMUC”.
