Shae DeTar is an american artist who creates dreamy images that feel like spellbinding illusions. Her technique of handpainting photographs together with a combination of well-curated clothing, attractive design, vibrant colors and charming female figures, inevitably confers her work a surreal aesthetic with an atmospheric touch of vintage and whimsical feeling. Shae DeTar’s photographic practice uses painted photography, a technique employed to add colour to photographs before colour processing was invented. In a world where images can be digitally manipulated, finding a photographer’s practice that explores alternative methods is rare and refreshing. Her work stems from a career in modelling and fashion design; experience she then uses to inform and plan her photographic shoots. Her painted photographs often seem mythical, situating models in an eerie and beautiful wilderness.
I suppose I am creating a world I wish I lived in, or I am trying to create a moment that is far more enticing than the one directly in front of me. When I am shooting, I am trying to take the muse, myself and the viewer out of direct reality, perhaps even into a world that doesn’t exist anymore or maybe even never existed.
