Michael Howard es un ilustrador y blogger también conocido como NVM Illustration que actualmente reside en Londres y cuyo trabajo parte de materiales muy simples, ya que suele trabajar con tinta y gouache, además de un lápiz 2H que utiliza para hacer sus preciosos dibujos en papel tamaño A2. Sus retratos expresan una enorme riqueza emocional y una percepción de movimiento incluso en su quietud, consiguiendo que sus personajes adquieran una personalidad y una vida propia y sin pretensiones.
En general, las temáticas que Michael Howard utiliza en sus ilustraciones tienen un aire natural y cotidiano, sobre todo en sus retratos masculinos y femeninos sorprendentemente expresivos. Erotismo y sensualidad también recorren su obra de forma natural, así como diferentes objetos, muchos relacionados con la música, y animales con vida propia. Todo ello nos llega a través de las líneas y el monocromo que nos recuerda a la tradición modernista de artistas como Egon Schiele o el mismo Klimt, así como la yuxtaposición en sus ilustraciones de la naturaleza y el cuerpo humano nos acerca más a una tradición romántica que el artista ha traído a los tiempos modernos con su estilo ilustrativo.

ENG: «I’d say that most of my inspiration comes from little phrases in books, little glimpses of conversation,» Howard said. «I think overall it is people who fascinate me the most due to the amount of diversity. » I think to capture mood or meaning there are many ways of communicating visually through artwork. I just feel by varying mark making techniques it’s a more accurate way to represent them, as we never see life through a still image. Movement is what makes art and the visual world interesting.»
Each piece is made using HB graphite pencils of varying thickness. Some are finished 10 minutes, while others can take up to three hours. It all depends on the source of inspiration.
Howard has made Tumblr a home for his work. He regularly asks users for inspiration, uploads photos of himself, and shares some of his fears. He has recently encouraged people to submit ideas for things for him to draw, like the following illustration.
