El coleccionista de arte neoyorquino Lio Malca se complace en presentar dos instalaciones a gran escala de Bill Viola este verano en La Nave Salinas, espacio expositivo especializado en arte contemporáneo internacional inaugurado en el año 2015 en el entorno del Parque Natural de Ses Salines, en la isla de Ibiza.
Dos de las obras más aclamadas del artista, Fire Woman y Tristan’s Ascension (The Sound of a Mountain Under a Waterfall), podrán disfrutarse este verano en la isla balear, del 21 de junio al 30 de septiembre en La Nave Salinas, en un sorprendente proyecto expositivo que invita a adentrarse, desde una mirada distinta, en el fascinante mundo de uno de los pioneros del videoarte y leyenda viva del arte contemporáneo.

La Nave Salinas, una edificación de 700 metros cuadrados concebida como un lugar para almacenar la sal cosechada en los estanques integrados en el Parque Natural de Ses Salines, fue construida en 1941 como parte de un programa de empleo desarrollado durante la crisis de la post Guerra Civil española. En 2015, el coleccionista de arte neoyorquino Lio Malca, desde su entendimiento del arte como herramienta formativa, de cambio y de integración social, convirtió el edificio en un espacio expositivo en permanente evolución donde compartir con el público aficionado al arte su prestigiosa colección y acercar a Ibiza y sus visitantes la obra y los artistas más influyentes del arte contemporáneo, desde la década de los 60 del pasado siglo hasta nuestros días. Este verano La Nave Salinas se complace en presentar una exposición de Bill Viola, en colaboración de Bill Viola Studio.
Las obras en exposición, Fire Woman y Tristan’s Ascension (The Sound of a Mountain Under a Waterfall), se presentan en una pantalla de más de 7 metros de altura dentro de un espacio completamente cerrado al exterior y provisto de un sistema de sonido 4.1 que envolverá al espectador en una experiencia transformativa. In 2015, Bill Viola creó estas videoinstalaciones como parte de una nueva producción del dramaturgo Peter Sellars de la ópera de Richard Wagner Tristán e Isolda. Lio Malca elige estas obras para presentarlas en La Nave cuidadosamente: «Siempre he sido un gran admirador de la obra de Bill Viola y, desde el primer momento que entré en La Nave, visualicé su obra proyectada a gran escala allí dentro. Este año ese sueño se ha hecho realidad trayendo a Ibiza dos de las obras más importantes del maestro Viola», Lio Malca.

Fire Woman –en castellano Mujer Fuego-, es una visión en la memoria de un hombre que agoniza. La silueta de una mujer aparece a contraluz ante un muro de fuego. Tras algunos minutos, la mujer avanza, abre los brazos y se hunde en su propio reflejo. Cuando las llamas de la pasión y la fiebre envuelven la mirada interior, y la revelación de que el deseo físico ya no regresará cega al observador, la superficie reflejante se hace añicos y vuelve a su estado esencial de formas ondulantes de luz pura.

Tristan’s Ascension (The Sound of a Mountain Under a Waterfall) –en castellano La ascensión de Tristán (El sonido de una montaña bajo una cascada)– describe la ascensión del alma después de la muerte, cuando despierta y es atraído hacia una cascada cuya agua sube en lugar de caer. El cuerpo de un hombre yace sobre una losa en una sala de hormigón vacía. Unas pequeñas gotas de agua aparecen a medida que suben desde el suelo y ascienden en el espacio. Lo que comienza como una llovizna se transforma en un diluvio atronador, y el agua que cae empuja el cuerpo inerte del hombre, que pronto cobra vida. Sus brazos se mueven desgarbados y su torso se arquea en las aguas revueltas.

Bill Viola (Nueva York, 1951) es un artista fundamental en el arte contemporáneo. Sus obras han sido expuestas en los principales museos del mundo y ha recibido numerosos reconocimientos a lo largo de su carrera, como el prestigioso MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1989). En 2017 fue nombrado miembro honario de la Royal Academy of Art de Londres. Influenciado por artistas como Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik y Bruce Nauman, Bill Viola se aproximó al novedoso universo del videoarte en la década de los 70, tras licenciarse en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Siracusa. Una década después era ya uno de los nombres de cabecera de la escena artística internacional de los nuevos medios electrónicos y audiovisuales.
Su obra gira alrededor de las preocupaciones de la condición humana, temas universales como el nacimiento, la muerte, la vida y la transformación que revelan su interés por las experiencias místicas, especialmente la filosofía zen, el misticismo cristiano y el sufismo. El arte medieval y renacentista están también presentes estéticamente en su obra, que muestra a menudo una calidad pictórica y en la que el sonido, la música, es parte esencial de la experiencia artística.
La tecnología es en la obra del artista neoyorquino una simple herramienta para abordar temas profundos y una condición inherente a la humanidad: la dualidad. La vida y la muerte, la luz y la oscuridad, la acción y la calma, la fuerza y la tranquilidad es un juego de contrarios constante en su trabajo. Obras que vienen de un mundo que forma parte de lo invisible, un lugar de paisajes interiores, paisajes donde el tiempo se extiende hasta el infinito, donde los sutiles cambios de luz crean una eternidad y donde el sonido se extiende más allá del oído. Un espacio para la meditación, la contemplación y, quizás, incluso la epifanía.
Por eso, como Bill Viola reconoce, «el lugar más importante donde mi obra existe no es en los museos ni en las salas de proyecciones ni en la TV ni tan siquiera en la pantalla de vídeo. Mi trabajo existe en la mente del espectador que lo ha visto».
El coleccionista Lio Malca. Desde que se embarcó en el mundo del arte en Nueva York a principios de los años 90, Lio Malca ha sido un coleccionista que ha disfrutado mostrando y compartiendo el arte con el público. Especializada en arte contemporáneo desde mediados de los años 60 a la actualidad, la colección atesora obras de artistas como Brody Condon, Hung Chi Peng, Quayola, Mark Ryden, Holton Rower, Zilvinas Kempinas, Royal Art Lodge Group, Andy Warhol, KAWS, Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring y Jean-Michel Basquiat. De estos dos últimos artistas, Lio Malca está considerado como uno de los mayores expertos, coleccionistas y prestamistas de su obra internacionalmente. Además de La Nave, Lio Malca posee una galería en Chelsea (NYC) y un hotel en Tulum (México), donde se exponen la obra pictórica y escultórica de la colección.
La Nave Salinas. El proyecto con la que se inauguró el singular espacio situado en el extremo occidental de la playa de Salinas fue una memorable exhibición del artista KAWS. En 2016, La Nave Salinas se transformó en un teatro para mostrar la instalación audiovisual 3D del artista Marco Brambilla. En 2017 Keith Haring fue el protagonista de una exposición monumental que reunió en Ibiza algunas de sus piezas más icónicas y representativas. En 2018, La Nave Salinas recibe a uno de los nombres absolutos del videoarte, Bill Viola, transformándose de nuevo, a través de un inesperado y sorprendente montaje, y convirtiendo La Nave Salinas en una instalación a gran escala.

Two of the artist’s most acclaimed works, Fire Woman and Tristan’s Ascension (The Sound of a Mountain Under a Waterfall), can be enjoyed this summer on the Balearic Island. Opening to the public on June 21st the exhibition will be on view until September 30th at La Nave Salinas. In collaboration with Bill Viola and the Bill Viola Studio, Fire Woman and Tristan’s Ascension will be presented on a 22-foot high screen inside a space completely closed off from the outside and together with a 4.1 sound system, will envelop the viewer in a transformative experience. These installations, on loan courtesy of Bill Viola Studio, were created in 2005 as part of a new production by Peter Sellars of Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde. Lio Malca chose these works carefully. He notes: «I have always been a great admirer of Bill Viola’s work. From the first moment I entered La Nave, I have always visualized that one day his work would be projected on a large scale. This year that dream will become a reality; two of the most important works by the master Viola will be shown in Ibiza.».

Fire Woman is an image seen in the mind’s eye of a dying man. The darkened silhouette of a female figure stands before a wall of flame. After several minutes, she moves forward, opens her arms, and falls into her own reflection. When the flames of passion and fever finally engulf the inner eye, and the realization that desire’s body will never again be met blinds the seer, the reflecting surface is shattered and collapses into its essential form—undulating wave patterns of pure light.

Tristan’s Ascension describes the ascent of the soul in the space after death as it is awakened and drawn up in a backwards-flowing waterfall. The body of a man is seen lying on a stone slab in an empty concrete room. Small drips of water become visible as they leave the ground and fall upward into space. What starts as a light rain soon becomes a roaring deluge, and the cascading water jostles the man’s limp body and soon brings him to life. His arms move of their own accord and his torso arches upward amidst the churning water.
Finally, his entire body rises off the slab and is drawn up with the rushing water, disappearing above. The torrent of water gradually subsides, and the drips decrease until only the empty slab remains, glistening on the wet ground. The image sequence is projected onto a tall, vertically oriented screen mounted on the wall.

Bill Viola (New York, 1951) is a fundamental artist in the contemporary art world. His works have been exhibited in many museums around the world. He has received numerous recognitions throughout his career, such as the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1989) and elected Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Art, London (2017). Influenced by artists such as Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, and Bruce Nauman, Bill Viola approached the emerging universe of video art in the 70s after graduating in Fine Arts from the University of Syracuse. A decade later, he was already one of the leading names in the international art scene for his new electronic and audiovisual media.
His work revolves around universal themes such as birth, death, life and transformation that reveal his interests in mystical experiences, especially with Zen philosophy, Christian mysticism and Sufism. Medieval and Renaissance art are also aesthetically present in his work, which often shows a pictorial quality in which sound and music are an essential part of the artistic experience.
Viola uses technology to address deep issues and inherent conditions of humanity with different examples of duality. Life and death, light and darkness, action and calm, strength and tranquility are constant themes in his work. Works that come from a world that is part of the invisible, a place of interior landscapes, landscapes where time extends to the infinite, where the subtle changes of light create an eternity and where the sound extends beyond the ear. Viola creates a space for meditation, contemplation and, perhaps, even epiphany.
That’s why, as Bill Viola recognizes, «the most important place where my work exists is not in museums or in the screening rooms or on TV or even on the video screen. My work exists in the mind of the viewer who has seen it».
The collector Lio Malca. Since he embarked in the art world in New York in the early 90s, Lio Malca has been a collector who has enjoyed showing and sharing his art with the public. Specializing in contemporary art from the mid-1960s to the present day, the collection treasures works by artists such as Brody Condon, Hung Chi Peng, Quayola, Mark Ryden, Holton Rower, Zilvinas Kempinas, Royal Art Lodge Group, Andy Warhol, KAWS, Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. With Haring and Basquiat, Lio Malca is considered to be internationally one of the greatest experts, collectors and lenders of his work. In addition to La Nave, Lio Malca has a gallery in Chelsea (NYC) and a hotel in Tulum (Mexico), where his pictorial and sculptural work of his collection is exhibited.
The space La Nave Salinas. In 1941, La Nave Salinas’ 7,535 square foot building was constructed as part of an employment program developed during the crisis after the Spanish Civil War as a place to store the salt harvested in the ponds of the Ses Salines Natural Park. In 2015, New York art collector Lio Malca used his understanding of art as a tool of change and social integration and turned the building into an exhibition space in permanent evolution where he shares his prestigious collection of contemporary artists from the 1960s to the present day with the public.
The first project this unique space started with was the memorable exhibition by the artist KAWS. In 2016, La Nave Salinas was transformed into a theater to show two 3D audiovisual installations of the artist Marco Brambilla. In 2017, Keith Haring was the protagonist of a monumental exhibition that brought together some of his most iconic and representative pieces. In 2018, La Nave Salinas welcomes one of the most prestigious names of video art, Bill Viola. La Nave Salinas will once again transform itself through an unexpected and surprising large-scale installation.
