Es una de las grandes revelaciones y una promesa del diseño estadounidense viene de Egresada de Parsons, escuela de arte y diseño en Nueva York. Los rasgos característicos de sus colecciones son las siluetas modernas, la solidez en su diseño conceptual y el proceso creativo de la producción de textiles. Para Jiapei Li, la história detrás de sus prendas es tan importante como el uso y mantenimiento de éstas. Su trabajo forma parte de las nuevas caras de VFILES una de las plataformas más importantes de la industria en Estados Unidos.
La colección de la primavera-verano 2017 de Andrea Jiapei Li se llama «Her name is DADA» y está inspirada en el movimiento de Dada de 1920: donde artistas tomaron inspiración de objetos eclécticos y a veces arbitrarias en la vida diaria.
La colección se compone de cuatro categorías: ropa de trabajo, ropa de deportes, desgaste social y las piezas más conceptuales. «Todavía queremos que la colección parece coherente», dice Weishi (el socio de Jiapei), «pero tenemos esos elementos en mente».
Más allá de la elegancia y el juego, la comodidad física y psicológica son la clave para la colección de Andrea Jiapei Li. Weishi observa cómo esa comodidad proviene de las siluetas, que proporcionan una cierta libertad de movimiento, y que la falta de restricción y la libertad absoluta de movimiento están muy Dada.
The dreamy colors and gradients making up the characteristically oversized shapes at Andrea Jiapei Li might have easily been been pixel-selected from a Photoshop-readied Magritte or Judy Chicago, but it was the Dada art movement that influenced the designer in concept. This point was driven home by the stoic game of volleyball, played in slow motion with a beachball-sized white balloon at the presentation. The collection was titled “Her Name Is Dada” and the key aesthetic was that of an ultra modern romantic, put into practice by the sport-ification via textile of feminine silhouettes. One example was the classic button down shirt, cut from a water-repellant cotton, sleeves and waist buckle-fastened by something you’d find on a backpack or in an airplane. Another was the introduction of vinyl.
“We love the girl who can take risks,” Li told us, “She enjoys the playful vibe, but she still has to be elegant.” This came through particularly well in a soft white ensemble, the body of the top pierced together with the outsized, ribbed sleeves exposing the shoulder.
“This is not serious, formal women’s wear,” says Li’s business partner, Weishi. “It’s playful, which translates to a way you live your life.” In that way, the collection was made up of four categories: workwear, sportswear, social wear, and the more conceptual pieces. “We still want the collection to look cohesive,” Weishi says, “but we have those elements in mind.”
Beyond elegance and play, physical and psychological comfort are key to the Andrea Jiapei Li brand. Weishi notes how that comfort comes from the silhouettes, which provide a certain freedom of movementand that lack of constraint and utter freedom of movement are so very Dada.
