El artista sueco Jockum de Nordström soñanaba en dibujos, pinturas y collages, la gente siempre estaba haciendo algo. Si montar a caballo, barcos de vela, hacer el amor o la reproducción de música, están constantemente en la acción. Su elenco miríada de personajes parece que vienen de otra época, situado en un mundo de tonos y colores apagados. Las imágenes de Nordström surgen de lo cotidiano y sus recuerdos, fantasías y pensamientos, lo que encuentra en los sueños de vigilia. Impregnado de una calidad surrealista, sus obras contienen a menudo elementos absurdos o violentos como mundos reales e imaginarios se combinan en la superficie del papel.
Jockum Nordström nació en Estocolmo en 1963, ciudad en la que continúa viviendo y trabajando. En el año 2000 el artista se une a la galería David Zwirner con la que tuvo su primera exposición en solitario en Estados Unidos. Además, ha expuesto también de manera individual en el Camdem Arts Centre de Londres o en el Swedish Institute de París.

Jockum Nordström’s paintings and collages consider the impact of tradition, and our sense of self within a wider community. The artist’s flatly abstracted and caricatured figures, animals, architecture and objects pit childlike wonder at the natural world against our contemporary way of living. The figures invite the viewer to take a closer look, changing as more attention is paid to the miniature details of their interactions.
Nordström uses a mishmash of techniques, shifting between various modes of representation. Faces appear to hover between expressions and styles, from the crude and cartoonish, to the graphic and illustrative or tight and classical. Scale and proportion also shift within the compositions; characters become as big as buildings and mountains, and ships, sea monsters and impossible landscapes are crammed into the page, as they might be in the uncontrollable creative imagination of a child.
