En febrero de 2014, un grupo de fánaticos de Adidas del Reino Unido se enteró de la existencia de una tienda en Mataderos, Buenos Aires, que contenía una extraordinaria cantidad de zapatillas Adidas vintage y descontinuadas. El grupo conformado por Ian Brown (músico de los Stone Roses), Robert Brooks (coleccionista), Neil Bedford (fotógrafo) y Greg Bond (cineasta), en conjunto con Gary Aspden y Mike Chetcuti de adidas, viajaron a Buenos Airs para conocer a la tienda y a su propietario, Carlos Ruiz. El viaje fue documentado bajo el ahora conocido documental ‘Sole Searching in South America’.
Una gran cantidad de piezas únicas de archivo fueron usadas por Gary Aspden como piezas de referencia para diseñar las Colecciones Adidas Originals X Spezial. Para reconocer a Carlos por su amable apoyo a la colección Spezial, Adidas ha creado las zapatillas ‘Carlos’ New York SPZL que forma parte de un micro pack conformado por dos modelos de zapatillas y dos remeras gráficas. Las New York son unas zapatillas vintage, originalmente creadas para correr, de la década de 1980. Éstas fueron descubiertas en la tienda de Carlos, y como homenaje, han sido convertidas en el calzado insignia de Carlos.
ENG: The Adidas Originals New York Spzl Carlos pays homage to the store owner of the now-notorious location in Argentina. Last year, Gary Aspden put together a team of fellow Three Stripe connoisseurs and took them on a trip to Buenos Aires to check out a shop that was stacked high with vintage Adidas products, which you can learn more about here. When they found the shop in the back streets, the crew met shopkeeper Carlos Ruiz, who has dedicated his life to his shop for the last 34 years. In order to give something back to Carlos, after he kindly supplied with them with some vintage gems, Adidas have created this special make-up of the New York. A predominantly pale blue upper is punctuated by light grey accents, which gives the shoe a nice vintage aesthetic. The tongue features a Stan Smith style tongue label, but with the face of Carlos Ruiz instead. Down below is a white midsole with Dellinger webbing to continue the retro vibe, whilst a black outsole rounds things off. It’s nice to see Adidas give something back to one of their life long fans… We reckon Carlos will be very happy with these!
