Si hay algo que caracteriza las fotos de Hoops es la expresividad, fuerza e impacto que producen los rostros que aparecen en ellas. Es un estilo único y original, fácilmente reconocible en el uso de los tonos fríos y el contraste entre el negro y el blanco que se presenta en la mayoría de fotografías. También es un fotógrafo muy reconocido por usar fondos y escenarios poco convencionales como lagos, plantas exóticas o simplemente abstractas. Los modelos a los que fotografía también son fácilmente identificables debido a sus rasgos físicos, los cuales suelen llamar la atención por su pronunciación.
En la mayoría de sus imágenes los modelos parecen estar vivos y esperando el momento preciso para aflorar desde cada una de ellas, llenos de fuerza y perspectiva. Actualmente reside en Tailandia, aunque pasa gran parte de su tiempo viajando entre Europa y América.
ENG: Hoops started out as a designer giving him an eye for composition and with no formal training in photography a definite talent is present in his work. As well as doing commissioned portraits Tom has an unconventional documentary side to his pictures. The character of the people he photographs shines from the images and the sense that they have been taking out of their surroundings adds to the dark and beautiful mood.
Tom Hoops: My main objective is to capture strong emotive images, some of them happen to be more photo journalistic. I have been lucky in finding a few editors who are able to publish the more artistic style of photojournalism. I think it’s becoming more difficult to sell rough and tough black and whites these days. Editors generally prefer straight colour shots with minimal tweaks.
I have always loved black and white. It takes an element out of a photo that I like. It pushes your shot to rely on subject matter and composition to a greater degree. There are some fantastic photographers that use colour in ways I can only dream of. At the moment I try to restrict my colour to the odd punch out of the blue amongst the black and whites. www.tomhoops.com
