Istvan trabaja con acrílicos sobre lienzo y algo de aerógrafo para profundizar en los colores. Sus cuadros son de estilo hiperrealista en situaciones surrealistas y empleando a menudo iconos de la cultura pop, muñecos, juguetes y otros elementos que le dan al conjunto un aspecto bizarro y algo macabro en algunas ocasiones, mientras que en otras sus pinturas alcanzan un tono desenfadado, burlón e incluso irónico.
Además de ser un gran pintor con un alto nivel de detalle y mucha carga simbólica en sus composiciones, Istvan Nyari ha trabajado como diseñador gráfico, en diseño de moda y en escenografías para el cine. His compositions use kitsch-like elements and draw inspiration from Japanese anime, cult sci-fi stories and fantasy fiction. His pictures usually feature familiar characters which bear multiple layers of meaning as they do not only reflect themselves, but also refer to the cultural environment and era that evoked them.
