El artista norteamericano Garry Winogrand está considerado como un renovador de la fotografía del siglo XX. Durante los años 1960 y 1970 captó la transformación de la mujer y su evolución en la sociedad. La colección Women are beautiful, está formada por 85 fotografías también recogidas por John Szarkowski, director del departamento de fotografía del MoMA, en un libro que recibe el mismo nombre de la exposición.
Garry Winogrand y Lee Friedlander representan un nuevo estilo de hacer fotografía, que se centraba simplemente en captar la realidad de la calle, sin retoques ni modificaciones… un nuevo estilo denominado Street Photography. El autor explica que fotografía una cosa para saber a qué se parece esa cosa una vez fotografiada, busca con una nueva mirada creativa la espontaneidad y naturalidad, lo que ahora nos recuerda al Street Style moderno. Si consideramos a Robert Frank como el fotógrafo por excelencia de los años 1950, Winogrand podría considerarse uno de los más representativos de los 60.
Garry Winogrand fue un street photographer obsesivo y tenaz. Tras su primer divorcio, vive la fotografía como un proceso liberador. En cuanto a los aspectos formales, la caída de líneas, generalmente hacia la derecha, de muchas de sus fotografías aporta tensión. Esta caída bien pudiera ser debida a la rapidez a la hora de la toma con la cámara de telémetro. Por la posición del visor, en un fotógrafo diestro, podría ser un efecto natural y no intencionado.
En la última etapa de su vida, Winogrand se dedica a pasear con un amigo en coche y a fotografiar a las mujeres desde la distancia. Quería saber qué proporción debían guardar en la fotografía para ser sensuales, a qué distancia aparecían sugerentes en sus imágenes.

Garry Winogrand was an obsessive, tenacious street photographer. After his first divorce, lives photography as a liberating process.
