El artista estadounidense Bill Mayer ha desarrollado una extensa carrera como ilustrador, habiendo trabajado para importantes empresas. “Sueños extraños” es una colección de pequeñas piezas en gouache sobre papel de acuarela. Se trata de obras que, según Bill, pretenden transmitir un contenido emocional, aprovechando el sentido poético que ofrece el uso lúdico de elementos surrealistas.

Además de las atmósferas oníricas, el elemento común en casi todas estas obras son los animales, que Bill utiliza ya sea antropomorfizándolos, deformándolos, jugando con las dimensiones y/o situándolos en ambientes inverosímiles.

«Continuando con la serie “Sueños extraños”, estas pequeñas pinturas en gouache se basan en imágenes de ensueño que están destinadas a compartir contenido emocional. Estos pequeños experimentos comenzaron en un momento en que algunas cosas perturbadoras estaban sucediendo en el mundo. Aunque no fue consciente ni deliberado, esos eventos parecieron encontrar su camino en esta serie. Siempre me han fascinado los sueños oscuros, imágenes que a veces se filtran en tu subconsciente, y en esta serie de pinturas, intenté plasmar esos extraños sueños en el papel.

Todas las pinturas están todas hechas en gouache sobre papel de acuarela. La serie al principio tenía algunos toques finales en photoshop, pero han ido derivando hacia medios exclusivamente tradicionales. Son un experimento continuo de medios y composición, y la naturaleza potente de los sueños. Creo que no hay secretos ocultos profundos. Es divertido jugar con las emociones que el arte puede generar. Creo que el color es realmente emoción. Las elecciones de color están hechas para reforzar esas emociones. Para mí hay un sentido de la poesía en el uso lúdico de elementos surrealistas.» «Para mí el elemento más importante de la pintura es el concepto. El medio que utilizas es solo una forma de avanzar en ese concepto original o encontrar algunos elementos que aporten inteligencia al trabajo.

ENG: The American artist Bill Mayer has developed an extensive career as an illustrator, having worked for important companies. In this post I will focus on his “Strange Dreams”, a collection of small pieces in gouache on watercolor paper. These are works that, according to Bill, intend to convey an emotional content, taking advantage of the poetic sense offered by the playful use of surreal elements.

In addition to the dream-like atmospheres, the common element in almost all these works are the animals, which Bill uses either anthropomorphizing, deforming, playing with the dimensions and / or placing them in unlikely environments.

«Continuing the Strange Dreams series, these little gouache paintings are based on dream-like visuals that are meant to share emotional content. These little experiments started at a time when some disturbing things were going on in the world. Although it was not conscious or deliberate, those events seemed to find their way into this series. I have always been fascinated with dark dream-visuals that sometimes seep into your subconscious, and in this series of paintings, I tried to put those strange dreams down on paper.

All of the paintings are all done in gouache on watercolor paper. The series at first had some finishing touches in photoshop but have been moving toward solely traditional mediums. They’re an ongoing experiment with medium and composition and the potent nature of dreams. I think there are no deep dark hidden secrets. It’s just fun to play with the emotions art can generate. I believe color is really emotion. Color choices are made to reinforce those emotions. To me there’s a sense of poetry in the playful use of surreal elements.» «For me, the most important element of the painting is the concept. The medium you use is just a way of furthering that original concept or finding some elements that add an intelligence to the work.»
