Miguel Chevalier: Memory building

Since 1978, Miguel Chevalier has focused exclusively on computers as an artistic means of expression. He quickly secured a spot on the international scene as a pioneer of virtual and digital art. Chevalier continues to be a trailblazer, and has proven himself one of the most significant artists on the contemporary scene. Miguel Chevalier’s oeuvre is experimental and multidisciplinary. His sources lie in the history of art and his work explores recurrent themes such as nature and artifice, flows and networks, virtual cities and ornate designs. In the 1980s, Miguel Chevalier began tackling the question of the hybrid and generative image. His interactive generative artworks give visitors the sensation of interacting with new nature and artificial intelligence.

Miguel CHEVALIER Tapis magiques 2014 Casablanca (Version courte, short version) from Claude Mossessian on Vimeo.

At the former Sacré Coeur Church in Casablanca, Morocco, is an interactive light display that covers the floor with a huge layer of light. The work references the world of biology, microorganisms, and cellular automata – as cells have the ability to multiply in abundance, divide and merge at different paces. pieces come together, fall apart and transform in shape at rapid speeds. The displayed organic universe mingles with a digital construction of overlapping pixels.
